Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who is leading the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, is responding to a report that he misrepresented his work history on his résumé.
The report, published Monday by the *Arizona Republic,* makes several claims regarding Nanos' time with the El Paso Police Department, including that his service there ended in 1982, while his résumé stated that he worked there until 1984.
A representative for the Pima County Sheriff's Department provided a statement to * *on Tuesday confirming that discrepancy, and owning up to another not included in the *Arizona Republic *report.
"The Pima County Sheriff's Department recently identified two clerical errors in Sheriff Chris Nanos' publicly posted resume," the statement said. "Both date discrepancies were administrative in nature and were not intended to mislead or misrepresent Sheriff Nanos' work history."

The statement continues: "Sheriff Nanos served with the El Paso Police Department from 1976 to 1982. His service with El Paso PD concluded in 1982, not 1984 as previously stated. Additionally, Sheriff Nanos was promoted to the rank of captain in 2007, not 2009."
An résumé with the errors corrected has since been uploaded to the PCSD website.
The statement concluded by stating that Nanos "has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the safety of the communities he serves," leading the department he has presided over since 2021 "with experience, integrity, and a clear focus on protecting the residents of Pima County."
But the claims made in the *Arizona Republic* report don't end there.

Nanos allegedly resigned from his post at the El Paso PD in order to avoid termination. The *Arizona Republic* cites records obtained from the El Paso PD that purportedly include allegations of insubordination, insufficiency, tardiness, and numerous disciplinary reviews related to accusations of excessive force, dereliction of duty, and off-duty gambling.
Reached for comment by the *Arizona Republic*, Nanos reportedly responded, "That's your 'urgent' request? You sure you don't want to go back to my high school and ask why I got swats from the principal? Good luck with your hit piece."
A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff's Department told EW they had no additional information to share regarding Nanos' time at the El Paso PD. EW has also reached out to Nanos and to the El Paso PD for comment.

Nanos has drawn criticism from some corners for his handling of the high-profile Guthrie case, which was opened Feb. 1 after *Today* anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother was reported missing by friends.
Luke Daley, a man who was detained by law enforcement officers and later the subject of a SWAT raid on his home, alleged after he was cleared of any connection to the Guthrie case that officers refused to tell him why he was being detained. "It seemed like more of a fishing expedition for them to try to get me to say something," he told *True Crime Arizona*.
Nanos has also been the subject of reports that he withheld physical evidence pertaining to the case from the FBI, which is assisting in the investigation. He denied those reports as "not even close to the truth." But as the search for Nancy Guthrie moved past a month, Savannah Guthrie acknowledged that her mother "may already be gone."
