Steve Carellmay be one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedians, but according to him, the funniest person in his household isn’t actually him.

In an interview with L’Officiel shared on Monday, March 9, the actor shared a rare glimpse into his decades-long marriage with wife Nancy Carell. Reflecting on their relationship, Carell revealed that the comedic dynamic between the two has always leaned in her favor.

“We read scripts together, and after 30 years of marriage, we know each other pretty well,” he said. “We really do finish each other’s sentences, but people who know us know that she’s way funnier than I am. She’s just a super-talented and smart person. And, you know, she’s a babe.”

Carell and Nancy first met in the early 1990s while performing with the famed Second City comedy troupe in Chicago. The couple tied the knot in August 1995 and later welcomed two children—daughter Annie, now 24, and son Johnny, 21.

These days, with their kids grown and the house a little quieter, Carell says he and Nancy are enjoying a different pace of life. “I have hobbies. I play sports. I hang out with my kids,” Carell said to the outlet. “My wife and I are trying to travel more now that we’re empty nesters.”

While Carell has spent decades navigating fame, he said keeping family life grounded has always been a priority. “A big thing was trying to make sure that my kids had a fairly normal upbringing,” he explained, noting that he and Nancy have never been drawn to the Hollywood party scene.

Outside of family life, Carell is currently promoting his new HBO comedy Rooster. The show’s theme song, “I Played the Fool (Main Title Theme),” was recently released to streaming services and features a collaboration between former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe and super-producer Andrew Watt, along with musicians like Travis Barker and Josh Klinghoffer.

Rooster is available to stream on HBO Max as of March 8, with new episodes dropping weekly on Sundays.
